When it comes to staying safe in the face of an emergency or natural disaster, it's important to be prepared. Emergency preparedness is the process of making sure you are ready for any potential hazards that may arise. This includes both man-made and natural disasters, and can involve a variety of steps to ensure your safety. The Emergency Preparedness and Response Program (EPR) is designed to help employers and workers prepare for and respond to any potential hazards.
This program evaluates occupational safety and health issues, and provides information on how to prepare for emergencies. It also helps employers and workers know where to go and how to stay safe when an emergency occurs. The priorities of the EPR program are determined by current events, and an emergency preparedness plan is implemented based on hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA). This plan is designed to reduce the destruction caused by unexpected events such as accidents, fires, sabotage, spills, explosions, natural disasters, terrorist activities, and medical emergencies.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides state and local governments with funding for preparedness programs. This funding helps improve the capacity of state and local emergency responders to prevent, respond to, and recover from a terrorist incident involving weapons of mass destruction such as chemical, biological, radiological products, nuclear devices, explosive devices, and cyber attacks. The Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPRO) manages much of this work and coordinates with other NIOSH programs that conduct research in this area.
